Rogue Trooper by Dave Gibbons, 1989.
I can still remember the Rogue Trooper annual his illustration appeared in – it was around the time that 2000AD was running Gibbons and Will Simpson’s “The War Machine,” the much-delayed story that rebooted the character, and it was clear that Fleetway was hoping that Rogue would follow Judge Dredd and become the next breakout character from 2000AD.
That that didn’t happen says a lot about how badly the reboot was botched, both in terms of schedule and content. To this day, I’m surprised that no-one stepped in twice during the entire process; first to say “No, wait, the biochips are a large part of the appeal of the series,” and then to yell “Giving this series to Michael Fleisher is a terrible, terrible idea.”
