There was a certain higher-up at DC who, when these issues were being drawn and the pages were coming in, told our editor that Mr. Samnee had no business drawing for DC and that “Checkmate isn’t a fucking Vertigo title.”
He was clearly correct. Mr. Samnee is now killing it with ever stroke of his pencil on this little-known title, Daresomethingmumblemumble.
I am very proud to say I worked with him “when.”
While this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of this kind of short-sightedness at DC when it comes to artists (not even the first time I’ve heard it in regards to the wonderful Chris Samnee), every single time it comes up, it makes me just that little bit sadder.
